Which citing/bibliography format is most widely used?

My teacher has us do everything in APA format, which is very confusing to me. I asked my relatives, who went to college, and they all said MLA format is the one they used. I have tried using MLA, and it seems much easier and more logical. Just wondering if I should memorize APA for the future... (college)
