How do I keep the paint from stripping off my bobby pins?

How do i keep the paint from coming off my bobby pins (a kind of hairpin originally invented in the 1800s for men, but are now mostly used by women) from frequent use? I hate having to replace them. I've thought of varnishing, but that would make them hard to slide off with the increased grip.
